7 Goal Setting MUSTS for an Amazing Life!

white book with text

The main principle in goal setting is simple, “If you don’t know the destination, how will you know you have arrived? Goals are the way to define the path of your life. They are your road map to success. The problem is that most people don’t know how to set proper goals. Here are 7 ways to make sure your goals have focus and lead where you want to go!

1. State the Goal in Positive Terms

People often set a goal in terms of what they don’t want! “I don’t want to be fat” or “ I don’t want to work two jobs.” Instead, try “I want to like what I see in the mirror” or “I want financial freedom to spend more time with my family.” Negative thoughts attract more negativity. Try a positive spin and see the difference it can make!

2. The Goal Must Be Within Your Control

Don’t make goals that are dependent upon the actions of others. If achieving your goal is contingent on someone else acting, this can lead to resentment and discontent. You are driver of your destiny. Don’t give someone else the keys!

3. Make the Goal a Sensory Experience

Use your imagination. What will it FEEL like to accomplish it? How will it LOOK? What does victory TASTE like? Can you HEAR the accolades of your friends and family? The more you can connect your senses, the more real the outcome will feel.

4. Set the Scope of the Goal

When is most important question. Too many people get stuck on the how. Set the goal, THEN plan on how to achieve it. The when of a goal provides the necessary focus to set your sights on a realistic target.

5. Ensure Balance

Make sure your goal fits into a balanced work/life scenario. Maybe you want to get a promotion. If that requires you to sacrifice your family commitments to get it, is it really a good goal? Explore all the alternatives to obtain the right balance when setting goals.

6. Know the Costs

What resources are needed to make this dream a reality? Time, money, and knowledge could all be required to make things go your way. Maybe you need to sharpen a skill or save up some operating capital before you can implement your plan. Know the costs upfront so there are fewer surprises down the line.

7. Ask Yourself WHY!

Simply ask yourself, “why is this goal important to me?” The answer might surprise you. I have had many times when I thought I wanted something. Then I took an honest look and realized my “why” wasn’t a good enough reason and did not justify the costs. Being honest with yourself is the best gift you can give.

When you properly set a goal with this model, two important things occur. First, you are in total harmony with your vision, belief and value systems because your entire “You” agrees and offers no resistance. Second, you are programmed to succeed. Your entire system aligns to make the goals a reality. The next time you are setting goals, try these 7 steps and watch the goal transform into something all-encompassing! You want simply WANT to achieve it, You will NEED to reach your goal!
