In my opinion, nothing makes an outdoor space more inviting than a fireplace or firepit. There’s nothing quite like the ambiance of fire to make a space feel cozy and relaxing. It also warms spaces up in the cool months and the flames help keep bugs away in the summer (not to mention you can roast marshmallows).
Our new house has a gorgeous screened-in porch with a fireplace that we take full advantage of all year long. We have a TV, comfy couches and cushions, and pillows, and we spend tons of time out there. We’ve even sat out by our outdoor fireplace on Christmas!
As wonderful as our screened-in porch is, I still miss evenings spent on our old back deck, watching the girls play in the yard in the sprinklers and on their swing! We worked hard on the renovation we did on our back deck in our old house. We built an awesome deck bar and also redid the backyard landscaping. But one of my favorite things we added that really took our enjoyment of the deck to the next level was the two fire pit columns (these are similar).
Of course, before we made the final decision to purchase the fire columns at our old house, I perused a million different backyard fire pit ideas! I wanted to share the best of the best that I found to both build yourself and buy if a DIY project isn’t in the cards for you right now.

This concrete fire bowl from Man Made DIY is so unique. Concrete projects are my favorite! The bowl shape makes this more of a modern concrete fire pit which I like.
Traditional DIY Fire Pit

The classic shape of the firepit combined with the circular seating area filled with pea gravel and classic Adirondack chairs is so incredibly inviting!
Square Modern Fire Pit
Homemade Modern’s square concrete fire pit on Ryobi is sleek and cool! It has nice wide sides, which I really like, and is a modern take on the conventional round fire pit. It is a simple fire pit, but a bit labor intensive with several steps. There aren’t as many square fire pit ideas out there, which makes this one even more special.
Quick DIY Fire Pit
The easy 4-step DIY fire pit by A Beautiful Mess is perfect for anyone looking to put together a fire pit that looks great in a short amount of time! The end results are great and the process sounds fairly simple. Made from concrete landscaping stones and a metal fire ring and filled with gravel, all it takes is some elbow grease.
In-Ground Fire Pit with Seating
Looking for in-ground fire pit ideas? This plan from Allen on Instructables is amazing and it includes the bench. I love that it is a patio of concrete pavers with a fire pit in the middle and a seating area. What a great place to gather, roast marshmallows and hang out! This is a DIY project that will leave you with an outdoor space you can enjoy as a family and with guests all year (and keep your wood organized which gives it bonus points!).
Classic Stacked Stone Fire Pit
This stacked stone fire pit on Houzz is beautiful and a classic look that I really love. The homeowners planned and designed this DIY fire pit idea and they built it from scratch using stone pavers, cement and gravel. The tutorial is thorough and easy to follow and the end result looks great.
Metal and Glass Tabletop Fire Pit
A totally different twist on fire pits, this tabletop metal and glass fire pit by The Art of Doing Stuff is perfect for a small space. Made to sit on top of a table, it is perfect for a smaller deck or a cozy sitting space. I love that it is a metal fire pit which makes it look modern and more like a centerpiece or decor!
Campfire Inspired Fire Pit
Lori’s inspiration when planning her family fire pit was an actual campfire. She nailed it with this rustic stone DIY fire pit on Greco Design Company. Made from rocks from their yard and Quikrete, this is exactly what she wanted! Proof outdoor fire pit ideas don’t have to be complicated to be perfect.
